Hi everyone,

Morning in Jakarta

I just completed my 4th day of teaching. Up at 6AM to swim in apartment houses’ luxury pool on 3rd floor. From the patio I note 48 skyscrapers and many others under construction. Prayers at the nextdoor mosque now over and the air already hot and filled with the exhaust fumes of thousands of motorscooters and cars.

One of Fifi’s (that’s where I’m teaching) drivers picks me up by about 7:30 am. The drive across town can take .5-1.5 hours. Have been having class in her home…marble floors and tropical plants outside, delicious Indonesian food prepared for lunch. Fried fish, fried stuffed tofu, eggplant in sweet soy sauce, pudding made from coconut milk and rice flour, sauces made from pure hot chiles, soup made with cassava noodles and okra, always a big bowl of rice, all so delicious.

Healthy Baby and Mother Spa

My students are all therapists at Fifi’s spas, www.momnjo.com, and excellent at working with babies. Fifi’s spas are branded, she has a franchise of 5 and plans to expand more, one spa in the upscale part of Jakarta treats 35 babies a day plus some adults. She is quite the entrepeneur, has an industrial engineering degree from a university in the US, some of the other franchise owners have similar backgrounds.

Glitzy…Wealthy…and not so Wealthy

I’m gathering that due to the enormous growth in Indonesia, mostly due to oil and gas, there is tremendous wealth…most of which is NOT trickling down. It is just bizarre to see an advertisement for the Tiffany Apartment building with a photograph of a Marilyn Monroe look-alike in jewels and furs! Many advertisements are in Indonesian but with a little bit of English. The Ritz-Carlton has a shiny new location here at least 40 stories high.

Pediatric Massage Class

Our class spent the morning at a school for children with Down’s syndrome, and the students did a great job making the children comfortable. We took massage tables, toys, hydrotherapy equipment, paper sheets for the tables, balloons, hand wipes, and set up an area in a classroom. Many children…in danger of becoming a 3 ring circus if we didnt keep the lid on with the help of parents.

Some unbelievably elegant women in nice dresses and matching head wraps. Some very sad stories, children with no parents, children with parents and severe problems, children who have had years of therapy and made no progress. Lovely parents and teachers. Fifi will go back there and teach parents how to do massage on a regular basis.

Two more days of class, then will fly to Bali to take a Balinese massage class which may be rather lightweight but gives me a place to plug in as a stranger visiting for a short time. I hope to get out in the countryside and out of cars for awhile!

More updates later, love to you all and hope all is well.
