InterPlay is an active, creative way to unlock the wisdom of the body, a set of practical tools and ideas to help individuals and communities thrive. It is based in a series of incremental “forms” that lead participants to movement and stories, silence and song, ease and amusement. It was developed by Cynthia Winton-Henry and Phil Porter over the last twenty years and has spread around the world.

In this presentation, local poet, singer/songwriter, and InterPlay leader Cassandra Sagan will introduce you to the four Coordination Patterns, or movement patterns: swing, thrust, flow, and shape. These are core or primal-based patterns of our “self” first found as neuromuscular tension patterns in the ‘30s. The interrelationship of mind and movement, and how these effect our energy and leadership styles, was developed by Betsy Wetzig in the ‘70s. The patterns make our movement and our mind function as one, and even a simple understanding provides insights into ourselves and others.

You could also think of this activity as a creative way to relate to, and understand, others.  InterPlay is for cultural creatives and recovering serious people. It is easy, fun, and life affirming. We will play with simple movement and expression forms ranging from 30 seconds to 2 minutes in length, and all activities can be done from the comfort of your chair!

Cassandra Sagan has devoted her life to helping others access their creative brilliance. For the past 25 years she has taught as a Poet in the Classroom, and performed original songs for adults and children. Cassandra is Portland’s first InterPlay leader, and is training to be a Maggid, or Jewish sacred storyteller.

“Massage Connections” is a series of monthly presentations organized by the Portland branch of Oregon School of Massage for LMTs and massage students; others are welcome. The presentations are intended as an opportunity to learn about topics of interest and network with fellow professionals. There is no charge for these events.
