After practicing massage in Salem for several years, Oregon School of Massage (OSM) asked me to teach the Massage Basics class. It is a 10-hour class intended for beginners giving them some basic skills, which they can use with their family. It is also intended for those interested in professional training; it might help them decide if practicing massage is a good fit for them.

In the class I demonstrate various techniques and provide some information about muscle anatomy. The students are then coached through the practical application, which they do with each other. In the four sessions we cover the back; the feet and legs; the head and neck; and the hands, arms and shoulders. That’s enough of a beginning to do lots of relaxation massage with family members. What I love about teaching this class is that each class is different and brings fresh ideas and questions. While it’s a given it would be a new learning adventure for most people taking the class, I’m amazed how it is always a new learning experience for me, too.

To address different learning styles, personal interests, etc. I am often experimenting with new ways to explain and demonstrate what we cover in class…i.e., how can we do this so participants can best, and most easily, absorb the process and the information. Another thing I love about the class is observing little lights go on for some of the students…e.g., becoming enthusiastic about healthy touch as a tool for being with other people, developing a new appreciation of the human body, learning and appreciating the value of receiving, and much more.

One thing I pay particular attention to is body mechanics. While most people enjoy giving massages; it’s great to learn to do it and practice postures and movements which make it easier and less stressful as a giver.

Even non-technical, relaxation oriented massage is a great health investment.
