An important measure of the training received by Oregon School of Massage (OSM) students is, well of course, the quality of the massages they are learning to give. This blog will begin a series of reports from various people who have received massages in OSM student clinics.

Yesterday on short notice I was asked to fill in for a client who was unable to make their appointment in the Student Clinic. Appointments are set up with different students each time, so it’s always a new experience. The student therapist and I spent a few minutes going over my health history and any concerns I wanted the massage to address. He then went over a plan for the massage, which was nice for me to know at the outset. It let me know he was really hearing the things we’d talked about, he had techniques to address them and he was able to map out a session that would cover them. Right away I started to feel I was in competent hands.

The massage was great. It covered lots of bases, but didn’t feel fragmented. There was massage, there was knowledgeable stretching, there was a range of techniques. The therapist’s hands were sure and his pressure was just right because he was checking in with me about it. Toward the end he asked if there was anything else I’d like addressed. I was already pretty satisfied, so he suggested something related to an area we’d discussed. I was surprised and impressed that he ended the treatment with something we hadn’t talked directly about, but that felt to be exactly what I needed. It seemed he intuited the perfect culmination for the treatment.

I had not expected to have such an excellent massage. No wonder the student clinic appointments fill up early!
