Report by Ray Siderius, OSM Director

Wednesday evening (Sept 7), at an Oregon School of Massage “Massage Connections” presentation, massage therapists, massage students, nurses, counselors and interested others learned about Portland area hospice programs. Over 30 attended the “Massage in Hospice” event presented by Cynthia Cohen, Providence Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, and Robyn Baehler, Portland LMT and Providence Hospice volunteer.
Along with lively discussions, the presentation included:
• the history of the hospice movement
• a description of how hospice eligibility is determined
• the scope of services provided by hospice
• exercises developing awareness of how we experience news of a loved one facing end of life
• benefits of massage for hospice patients
• how hospice work inspires and teaches LMT’s
• volunteer and employment opportunities for massage therapists
• numerous anecdotes of what Providence staff, volunteers and LMT’s experience working with hospice patients
Providence Hospice both contracts with LMT’s and seeks LMT volunteers to provide massage for hospice patients. All Providence hospice volunteers receive extensive training.
