“Sophie’s Story”

Do you ever read massage and bodywork industry publications? I do because I think it’s a great way to keep current on industry trends and new modalities, and to learn more about the impact our profession is making in the world. Just today I looked through the September/October 2010 Massage and Bodywork Magazine from ABMP and this article caught my eye – “Integrative Bodywork for Special Needs Children.” Not only did it articulate clear suggestions on how to practice this type of work, it also provided an inspiring story of Sophie, an 11-year old girl with a genetic developmental and sensory dysfunction, who has learned to find peace in her body with the guidance of her family and author/bodyworker Stephanie Mines. I finished the article feeling excited about how integrative bodywork can help make a positive difference in the quality of life for special needs kids and their families and look forward to reading more about this topic in the future.

I recommend you take a few minutes to look over this month’s ABMP Massage and Bodywork Magazine. Here’s a link – ABMP Digital Magazine. Sophie’s story is on p. 34. And, while you’re there, maybe you’d like to pick up a few tips on “How to Maintain an Enjoyable Practice” on p.56. If you don’t have time right now, I suggest you set aside 15 minutes a week to read industry publications that interest you. You might find yourself reeducated, reinvigorated, and reconnected to our wonderful profession.
