With an emphasis on embodied functional anatomy, kinesiology, and mindbody training, their work helps people understand and experience their design and function so that they can operate more fully and freely in their bodies, minds, and lives.Alison is a Faculty Franklin Method Educator and Registered Yoga Teacher/Therapist in Portland, OR. She owns Working with Yoga, offering workplace yoga and assists Franklin Method Teacher Trainings alongside the creator, Eric Franklin. Understanding Chronic Pain Course Hours: 3 Course SyllabusUnderstanding Chronic PainCourse Description: Pain is a global health problem. One in five people suffer with pain every year. One in ten people experience chronic pain every year. The annual costs of treating pain are greater than the costs of treating cancer, heart disease and diabetes combined. 43% of Americans receiving massage reported they did so for health conditions such as pain management, injury rehabilitation, migraine control, or overall wellness. 88% of consumers agree that massage can be effective in reducing pain.Chronic Pain is very different from acute Pain and presents unique challenges for both the patient and the treating therapist. Chronic Pain is defined as pain that has not abated after 6 months, however it could have been continuing for several years. Patients may be taking a number of medications and coping with losses in relation to their job, family, other health problems, social identity, loss of positive experiences. This class presents options for working with this population who often don?t receive the consistent care that they need.Chronic pain has its own unique physiology and symptom picture.? Treatment goals aim to reduce problematic symptoms and improve quality of life. Once goals are identified, optimum treatment techniques, hydrotherapy and homework/self-care can be prescribed to follow clear critical thinking guidelines.? Massage therapists who complete this class will able to understand chronic pain. Armed with solid information and together with patient input, therapists are prepared to figure out what will be most helpful for their individual clients.Learning Outcomes:Students will demonstrate proficiency in critical thinking/ making clinical decisions about tactics to help patients cope with:1.
